Last suspect in fatal 2021 Brownsville shooting sentenced to 19 years
The last suspect in the fatal shooting of a Brownsville man in 2021 has been sentenced, according to court records.
Carlos Alberto Lopez was convicted for the murder of Edgar Barrera and was sentenced to 19 years in prison last Thursday. The court dismissed one count of tampering with evidence.
His brother and co-defendant, Hector Hugo Lopez Jr., was sentenced to 35 years in prison last year and also had one count of tampering with evidence dismissed.
Michael Rodriguez, the third co-defendant, was sentenced to 10 years in prison on two counts of tampering with evidence earlier this year.
On Aug. 4, 2021, Brownsville police responded to a small apartment complex in the 5400 block of Boca Chica Boulevard.
Once at the scene, police noticed a white vehicle had collided with two other vehicles there. Inside that vehicle, they found Barrera slumped over with a gunshot wound.
At the time, investigators believed Barrera was driving when he was shot.
The Lopez brothers were arrested at a residence at the southeast side of Brownsville.
The duo and Rodriguez were indicted by a Cameron County grand jury on Jan. 25, 2022.
