Day-to-day is cozy, rich at Weslaco’s Daily Grind

WESLACO — The grind doesn’t stop just because it’s a little cold outside or because there’s a new president or because your girlfriend is in Mexico again.

It’s completely coincidental that she happens to be working in Mexico again on a day that’s colder than usual and when I happen to be trying another Rio Grande Valley coffee spot. She’s not just running off to Mexico every time I have to do one of these, right? I should call her …

Not really knowing what to do, and not quite comfortable going places by myself anymore — and let’s be honest, it’s way too wet and cold to go anywhere — I faced a dilemma.

But through the overcast skies, a silver lining presented itself. This might be a good opportunity to catch up with my good friend, Tony. He joined me when I reviewed Salazar’s Burgers Y Mas in Weslaco, which I am sure you have all read and familiarized yourselves with.

We decided to go to Weslaco’s Daily Grind, which is not too far from the historic Villa De Cortez in downtown Weslaco.

It’s been a while since Tony and I have had the opportunity to catch up. We were joined by his girlfriend and third wheel, Melanie.

The inside of Daily Grind is cozy with warm lighting and a good selection of jazz and classic rock played at a comfortable volume. One wall near the coffee bar showcased some U.S. military artifacts behind a large glass case. Further down the wall was a shelf filled with board games and books underneath a few certificates of recognition.

When it was our turn to place our orders, we all inadvertently ordered lattes. Melanie ordered a white mocha chocolate and Tony ordered a mocha latte. I asked the barista for her recommendation, and she suggested the vanilla latte.

Not wanting to repeat the vanilla overload that happened when I went to 7th & Park in Brownsville, I decided to try the caramel latte.

There is a good selection of seating available throughout the coffee shop, which we took advantage of in an area where there weren’t too many people.

We had much to catch up on, including Apple TV’s “Severance,” which we all enjoy; the Dallas Cowboys season, which we did not enjoy; and the inauguration of President Donald Trump, of which there were mixed opinions.

When our coffees arrived, it felt as though no time had passed since we took our seats.

“The coffee is super good today,” Tony said as he sipped his mocha latte. “Creamy, tasty. This is the one place I could say that never fails.”

I could clearly understand his enthusiasm. I asked Melanie for her opinion of her white mocha latte.

“It’s strong, but sweet,” she said.

My caramel latte was good. I couldn’t really taste the caramel flavor, but the flavor of the espresso and the steamed milk proved more than efficient in carrying my expectations for the coffee establishment.

We chatted for nearly two hours before deciding that it was time to leave. I decided to order a drink to go. I asked the barista if they had cold brew, and he told me that he could make me a hot coffee and pour it over ice.

He prepared the coffee using the pour-over method, which I’ve read is one of the best ways to extract the purest, best tasting coffee. When the coffee was finished brewing, he poured it into a cup of ice with some whole milk and vanilla syrup.

The drink was better than I’d anticipated. The coffee was absolutely phenomenal. I immediately regretted adding the whole milk, which only diluted the dark chocolate and floral notes from the coffee.

I’ll just have to come back and order a proper pour-over coffee next time.

Daily Grind is located at 409 South Missouri Ave. in Weslaco. Hours are 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
