Man accused of fatal Brownsville Public Library shooting ruled incompetent to stand trial

Humberto Paz

A judge on Monday ruled that the man accused of a deadly shooting at the Brownsville Public Library is incompetent to stand trial, court records show.

Humberto Paz, who is charged with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, is accused of the May 11, 2024 shooting at the library in the 2600 block of Central Boulevard that left 71-year-old Vahid Khaledi dead from a “gunshot wound to the head.”

He was indicted on July 17, 2024 and his attorney, Ed Stapleton, filed a motion prior to his arraignment requesting a psychological evaluation.

“A compelling need exists for psychological evaluation for the following reason: Mr. Paz has limited communication except for expressing ideas that are unconventional and difficult to follow his lawyer doubts his competence to stand trial,” the motion stated. “The evaluation will assist in determining the competency of Mr. Paz.”

Police said the shooting followed an argument between Paz and Khaledi.

“Preliminary information revealed that the incident arose due to a verbal altercation between the victim and the aggressor, both (sic) whom were visiting the library,” police said previously.

Paz remains held in the Cameron County Carrizales-Rucker Detention Center, but will be transferred at some point to a state hospital with the objective of restoring competency.

He has pleaded not guilty through his attorney.
