Here’s what Brownsville motorists should know regarding recent road closures

The city of Brownsville is temporarily disconnecting a traffic signal at an intersection to make way for an “essential upgrade,” while also announcing an unrelated road closure to determine the most effective solution for repairs following the discovery of a sinkhole.

The city announced Wednesday the temporary closure of South Dakota Avenue following the discovery of a sinkhole at the Resaca crossing, adding that the closure will remain in place until further notice.

“The sinkhole was discovered during routine inspections, prompting city officials to act swiftly,” the city said in a release. “The Engineering and Public Works Department is actively investigating the situation to identify the root cause and determine the most effective solution for repairs.”

Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area as well as follow detour signs for alternative routes.

Over at the intersection of East Levee Street and East 10th Street, the city said Tuesday that its engineering and public works department traffic branch temporarily disconnected the intersection’s traffic signal to allow for significant traffic signal improvements.

The disconnection will occur from Thursday, Oct. 17, through Monday, Oct. 21.

“During this period, motorists are urged to exercise caution and pay close attention to the temporary traffic signs that will be placed in the area to guide traffic flow and ensure safety,” the city said in a release.
