Hidden Gems: Local Businesses & Creatives You Should Know
Every day we have a choice. We can support an up and coming podcaster, try a new family-run restaurant, join a boutique gym started by a local fitness champ or we could keep giving away our money to the handful of giants who already control so much of our commerce. Our daily decisions impact the kind world we live in; if we want a world where small businesses are growing and artists and creatives are thriving then we should support them with our time, money and attention. We’re proud to highlight inspiring creatives and entrepreneurs each week in Hidden Gems series. Check out some of our latest local gem features below.

As of this year my final project was called My Testimony where I partnered with Jordan Burk of Kelly and Kelso he write books about kids with disabilities and we have partnered to create a character with scoliosis. To raise funds for the book I hosted a scoliosis blockparty in my town and show that it is ok to be different. Having scoliosis does not define me and it doesn’t define others that have it. It has in fact motivated me to become an orthopedic surgeon when I get older so I can help find new technologies for scoliosis. Read More>>

Initially, I was on my own, working tirelessly to get the business off the ground. My husband, meanwhile, took on the tremendous challenge of working full-time as a mechanic. His morning would start at 4 AM, after a long day he’d return home around 5 PM, quickly change clothes, and together we’d head out to our scheduled hydromulch jobs. He would load the tank and spray the application while I drug the hose, dealt with customers, and operated the machine. He was essentially working two jobs at once, demonstrating incredible dedication and support as I grew the new business. Read More>>

I was also spreading the word about suicide prevention and mental health awareness, helping young adults and adults get through these dark times. I lost people to suicide, and I know how it feels to feel helpless in certain situations. I wanted to let people know they weren’t alone. So with the income I was making with my theme page’s I’d do live giveaways, talent shows and give out prizes, donate etc. I fell in love with being able to help and make people happy. Read More>>

I’m Jeffrey Irokwe, an actor, fitness influencer, and entrepreneur with a deep passion for media production. My journey into the entertainment industry began quite serendipitously when I was around 16. A childhood friend, eager to test his new camera, asked me to pose for a photoshoot. As a football player in decent shape, I agreed, and to our mutual surprise, the photos turned out remarkably well. This unexpected experience ignited a spark within me, leading me to pursue acting more seriously. Read More>>

Coming from someone who always prioritized my education and had goals of working for a pharmaceutical company, founding a vegan candle & self care brand was never in the cards for me, at least I don’t think it was. I founded WaxT & Co., previously WickT Candle Co., in 2021 after an abusive relationship and after dealing with the loss & grieving my still born son. My own journey was the inspiration behind it all; a clean, vegan self care brand that helps improve mental health and amplify any self care routine. Read More>>

I got involved in real estate at the very young age of 17. I was already enrolled and about to start my first semester at CU Boulder where I planned to study Psychology. At the same time, I started dating a man who was a little bit older than me, who was heavily involved in real estate investing. Honestly, he coerced me into dropping out of college and pursuing real estate with him. Do I regret it though? Absolutely not. I love the career I have cultivated and while not always easy, I still help so many people, just in a very different way than I set out to initially. Read More>>

My fascination with fragrance has always been tied to the stories it can tell. I believe that candles should do more than simply scent a room—they should evoke memories and emotions. My professional career all started in the trade show industry working as a Marketing and Sales Associate for a small boutique exhibit shop. I got to really cut my teeth at this company. I was the only person responsible for Sales and essentially, the overall growth of the organization. Plenty of mistakes were made and lessons learned in these first 4 years. This was the perfect start to my career because it had a perfect balance of pressure for success and room to try new things. I have been an artist my whole life. As a child, I loved reading the Sunday comics in the newspaper and I loved watching cartoons. I was fascinated at how cartoons were made and thought I would be a cartoonist when I grew up. I started out drawing cartoons and characters as a child: Peanuts, Punky Brewster, Strawberry Shortcake, DuckTales, Rainbow Brite – so many! I mailed my drawings to Disney and received a package back in the mail. It was a stack of Disney Comic Books from an animator at Disney with a personal letter encouraging my artistic ability. I was tired of working for other people and wanted to live more in service. As I allowed the mourning of my old religion I walked over the freedom bridge to being able to fully accept myself, love myself, and develop my relationship with spirit further through the lost language of spirit which my body was naturally tapped into. By connecting authentically with my intuition, I was able to heal myself of chronic pain and joint problems, reproductive system imbalances, and mental health issues. Read More>>
