RAYMONDVILLE — “Stop, drop and roll!”

Those three words can save the lives of people confronted with the heavy smoke billowing from a fire.

The Raymondville school district began Fire Prevention Week on Monday with activities to extend fire awareness and safety to its students, said Deputy Superintendent Benjamin Clinton.

The National Fire Prevention Association has sponsored Fire Prevention Week each year since 1922. It is observed each year during the week of Oct. 9 to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire which began Oct. 8, 1871.

The district began the week with visits from several local entities. Raymondville Fire Department’s Chief Oscar Gutierrez and Assistant Fire Chief Randy Salinas attended, as did the Raymondville Volunteer Fire Department and the school district’s police department. They spoke to students at both Pittman and L.C. Smith elementary schools about fire safety.

The sessions covered a range of topics regarding fire safety, including how to safely evacuate a building and the importance of having a fire safety plan.

Students watched a live demonstration with a fire truck and learned how firefighters use equipment to extinguish flames, Clinton said.

“The excitement hit a new high when students got to participate in a fire hose demonstration, spraying water and feeling what it’s like to be part of the team,” Clinton said.

The excited kids told their parents stories about the fire truck demonstration and fire safety and surviving a fire.

“Dad!” said one Pittman Elementary student as he climbed into the car during after school pickup.

“Did you know if there’s a fire, you have to stop, drop, and roll?” he said.

The child was telling his father how to avoid smoke inhalation. He also told him about feeling doorknobs to check for heat.

The students, however, brought home more than stories and advice. They also took with them a fire safety activity book with checklists, encouraging families to create and review their own fire safety plans.
