Edinburg to host Texas Cook’Em on Saturday
The Edinburg Chamber of Commerce is once again gearing up to host a popular barbecue competition and festival this weekend.
The 18th annual Texas Cook’Em: High Steaks in Edinburg festival kicks off bright and early with the “Firecracker 5K” run at 7:30 a.m. this Saturday.
After the race, runners and festival goers are invited to gather at the Ebony Hills Golf Course along Freddy Gonzalez Drive for a day filled with fun, food and foot tap-worthy tunes.
Barbecue competitors will meet for a “cooks meeting” at 8 a.m., with competition deadlines for steak, chicken, ribs, brisket and rib-eyes staggered between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.
The final awards will be announced at 5 p.m.
Meanwhile, for those looking for some family-friendly fun, the festival grounds are set to open at 2 p.m.
Highlights of the festival include the “Cars & Stripes Autoshow” sponsored by Bert Ogden at 4 p.m., a skydive show at 6:15 p.m., and the “Sizzle and Stripes Fireworks” show at 9 p.m.
Music lovers will enjoy the festival thanks to several bands who will be performing throughout the festival, including the Tejano groups, Mesteño and Intenso, as well as DRAFT Music and Peyote Hill.
Capping off the night will be headline performers, the Josh Abbott Band, who will go on stage at 9:30 p.m.
The Texas Cook’Em festival will be a pedestrian friendly event. As such, festival goers and Edinburg residents alike should be aware of several road closures that will occur starting Saturday morning and ending on Sunday.
Freddy Gonzalez Drive, from 4th Street to 9th Street, will be closed to all traffic at 6 a.m. on Saturday.
Attendees can find event parking across the street from the golf course at South Middle School, 601 W. Freddy Gonzalez Dr.
Additional parking will also be available at the Teleperformance parking lot, 1701 S. Closner Blvd., and at the Richard Flores Stadium parking lot, 1800 S. Stadium Dr.
Edinburg officials also remind festival goers to make a plan if they intend to consume alcohol while at the festival.
“Texas Cook’Em organizers and the Edinburg Police Department emphasize the importance of responsible drinking and sober driving. To facilitate transportation, designated drop-off and pickup locations for taxis, Uber, and Lyft have been arranged at Teleperformance,” the city stated in a news release.
Additionally, the city is prohibiting several items from the festival, including:
>> hard-sided and soft coolers;
>> pets, exclusive of service animals, which are allowed;
>> golf carts, skateboards, hoverboards or other personal transportation devices;
>> illicit drugs and other contraband;
>> outside food and beverages;
>> glass;
>> tents, shade canopies, sports umbrellas, or beach or pole-style umbrellas that are larger than 63 inches;
