(The Dallas Examiner) – Much of South Dallas encompasses low-income households with low access to vehicles and a few discount grocery stores. Thus, the area has been designated as a food desert. Though low-budget and non-traditional grocers and community gardens have opened throughout the Southern Sector, many families still lack suitable transportation.

To make it easier to obtain fresh, healthy food in South Dallas, Grocery Connect recently launched an initiative to provide free delivery of groceries through online orders, for pick up at nearby designated staffed centers.

The Bonton Farms initiative – in partnership with Kroger Delivery – offers tens of thousands of nutritious options through Grocery Connect.

“This partnership is all about how do we eradicate food deserts? Our mission is to disrupt systems and to do that nationwide. But it’s going to start right here in Dallas,” Gabrielle Madison, president of Bonton Farms, stated in a promotional video. “And why this is so significant is because Kroger and their fulfillment center in South Dallas has really been the turning point on grocery delivery, especially in this area of Dallas.

“So what we said was how can we have a partner that really understands how to get delivery timely as well as consistently and Kroger just rose to the top every time.”

The program pairs online grocery shopping with support services to provide a curated shopping experience that supports busy schedules. Locations include Dallas Bethlehem Center, located at 4410 Leland Ave. and ICDC – Frazier and Mill city neighborhoods, located at 4907 Spring Ave., Ste. 100. Delivery windows are Tuesday through Saturday in one-hour time blocks between 2 – 6 p.m.

“So we’re here partnered with Grocery Connect and Bonton Farms, and we’re working to serve this new program in South Dallas where we bring our delivery vans to the center and help distribute and get groceries into this community,” said Ben Hamilton, vice president of eCommerce/Delivery/Fulfillment at Kroger.

“When we look at, you know, the communities that we want to serve, this is a really important place for us to continue to grow. But also, more than that it’s about making sure that we make this program accessible to everybody in the community.”

Shoppers must have access to a mobile device or computer to sign up for the program. All orders are required to be $35 or more. Acceptable forms of payment are credit, debit and EBT cards. To save money, use the monthly discount code: WELOVEGC. The code will change each month.
