When the executive director of the National Cutting Horse Association asked if I wanted to get on a cutting horse, I initially thought he was joking. Dear reader, he was not.Naturally, I roped in my colleagues Emily Wolf and Camilo Diaz for the ride (pun most definitely intended). As a former barrel racer, Emily was a natural. I, on the other hand, was just glad that the 16-year-old horse named Pretty Boy, owned by former Colorado Rockies pitcher Aaron Cook, knew what he was doing. If you’ve had the chance to check out my most recent story, you’ll know that cutting horses have incredible training and instincts that allow them to operate as if on autopilot while working to separate one cow from the rest of the herd. The footage of Emily and me learning to follow a flag — which served as a stand-in for a cow — has been redacted. But Camilo did a great job of capturing the pros at work. His video is a great primer on the sport if you’re thinking of checking out the summer spectacular, which ends Saturday. The $0 admission fee is hard to beat.
