A record setting 193 athletes from around the world are out and competing in this year’s Olympic games, according to Outsports magazine. That beats the previous record of 186 set in the 2021 Tokyo games.
Of those, 32 are on Team U.S.A. competing in 11 sports, giving us the largest out contingency. Seven of the women on the women’s U.S. basketball team or half the team are LGBTQ. Six members of the rugby team and six members of the rowing team are out. Track and field boasts four LGBTQ team members including Sha’Carri Richardson of Dallas.
The next largest contingency of out athletes at this year’s Olympic games is Brazil with 30. Australia follows with 22. Germany claims 13 and Spain 12. Canada and Great Britain are tied with 11 each.
Some surprises among countries represented. The Philippines has two out athletes and Turkey has one. The Refugee Olympic Team has one, a boxer named Cindy Ngamba
These numbers are sure to change as athletes come out before the games end.
