Dallas Southern Pride Celebrates Juneteenth Unity & Encourages Self-Love Through Testing
Dallas Southern Pride (DSP) tapped up its celebration of Juneteenth Unity weekend on June 17th, 2024, drawing thousands to the Big D for what has become known as one of the most eventful Pride and Juneteenth celebrations across the country. The annual event honors a rich history and contributions of Black LGBTQ+ individuals in the city.
This year’s DSP, led by president Ahmad Goree, offered a variety of events, fostering community, celebrating diversity, and addressing social issues. The weekend kicked off with a vibrant ball and happy hour, showcasing the energy and pride of the Black LGBTQ+ community. Throughout the weekend, attendees enjoyed social gatherings, brunches, pool parties, and entertainment events, one of which featured U.S. Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett.
Dallas Southern Pride not only celebrates the present but also honors the past. Juneteenth, commemorated on June 19th,marks the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. By incorporating Juneteenth into its festivities, DSP acknowledges the historical struggles of Black people and their ongoing fight for equality.
The success of Dallas Southern Pride 2024 paves the way for future events. The dedication of organizers and the enthusiastic participation of the community ensure that DSP will continue to be a vital platform for celebrating Black LGBTQ+ culture and advocating for social change.

More Than a Party
But, Dallas Southern Pride wasn’t just about the party, they also made it a point to address health disparities in the LGBTQ+ community through testing and their leadership conference. Partnering with Abounding Prosperity, Inc., DSP hosted a conference focusing on health issues impacting Black LGBTQ+ communities. This event provided resources and fostered discussions on improving health outcomes.
Abounding Prosperity, a Dallas-based non-profit lead by CEO Tamara Stephney, has been working to bridge this gap for years now. Founded in 2005, the organization provides vital services like health screenings, educational programs, and economic empowerment initiatives. Their focus on HIV/AIDS prevention, mental health support, and mobilizing resources aims to cultivate a future where all Black men in Dallas have the opportunity to live healthy and fulfilling lives.
This year, through their partnership with Dallas Southern Pride, the group is encouraging members of the Dallas community to take part in National HIV Testing Day. Every June 27th, the nation unites for National HIV Testing Day (NHTD). This year’s theme, “Level Up Your Self-Love: Check Your Status,” emphasizes the importance of getting tested for HIV as an act of self-care and self-compassion.

The State of HIV in Dallas
Despite its vibrant culture and booming economy, Dallas faces social and health disparities that disproportionately impact Black communities, particularly LGBTQ+ individuals. Dallas County faces an ongoing challenge with HIV. In 2021, an estimated 19,597 people were living with HIV, with a concerning rate of new diagnoses. Although knowledge of HIV status is relatively high, statistics show a gap in linkage to care and viral suppression, highlighting the need for continued outreach, prevention efforts, and access to treatment.
Though data regarding STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections) specifically amongst LGBTQ+ people in Dallas County is scarce, national trends and local risk factors can provide some insight. LGBTQ+ individuals, particularly men who have sex with men (MSM), may face higher STI rates due to factors like increased numbers of sexual partners and specific sexual practices. Unfortunately, Dallas County also has a high overall rate of STIs, suggesting a need for increased access to testing, prevention education tailored to LGBTQ+ communities, and resources for sexual health promotion.

National Testing Day Encourages Self-Love
Knowing one’s HIV status is crucial for several reasons. First, early detection of HIV allows individuals to access treatment that can significantly improve their health and lifespan. Next, people who know their HIV status can take steps to prevent transmission to their partners. Lastly, knowing the status can alleviate anxiety and fear associated with the unknown.
While National HIV Testing Day serves as a crucial reminder, getting tested once isn’t enough. Individuals with certain risk factors should consider getting tested regularly. Talk to your doctor about your risk factors and how often you should be tested.
Despite significant progress in HIV treatment and prevention, stigma surrounding the virus persists. National HIV Testing Day serves as a platform to raise awareness and combat stigma. Open and honest conversations about HIV can help create a more supportive environment for those living with the virus.
This National HIV Testing Day, take a step towards self-love and get tested. Encourage your friends, family, and loved ones to do the same. By getting tested and promoting awareness, we can work towards a future free of HIV stigma and transmission.
