On May 4, voters will elect three new people to the Tarrant Appraisal District’s board of directors — the first time in history residents have a direct say in who sits on the board.

Traditionally, board members have been elected by taxing entities such as Tarrant County and Fort Worth ISD. But a November constitutional amendment created three new at-large positions, to be filled by the public during the May 4 general election.

The Fort Worth Report is co-hosting a candidate forum with the League of Women Voters of Tarrant County at 5:30 p.m. April 17 at 1515 Commerce St., where residents can hear from those running for these new positions. Those elected in the May 4 election will join the tax assessor-collector and five board members elected by the taxing entities. Appraisal board members govern the appraisal district. Among their primary duties are selecting the chief appraiser, adopting the annual budget and ensuring the district follows procedures set by law. The board does not appraise property. Board members are not paid.
