Republican John McQueeney has announced his candidacy for State House District 97.

The seat opened up after incumbent Rep. Craig Goldman, R-Fort Worth, announced that he would run to fill longtime U.S. Rep. Kay Granger’s seat. Granger announced her retirement in November.

McQueeney is a Fort Worth businessman and Texas Christian University graduate. He previously owned a McDonald’s franchise, and now owns a Chicken Express franchise. He also worked as director of leasing at RadioShack.

“As a small business owner and entrepreneur, I am running to defend the conservative values that have made our economy strong and to ensure that future generations have a safer and more prosperous Texas,” McQueeney said in a campaign announcement.

He did not respond to a request for an interview by the time of publication. In the campaign announcement, he cited increasing border security, stopping drug and human trafficking, providing property tax relief and championing school choice as issues he’d address if elected.

The filing period ends at 6 p.m. Dec. 11. As of this writing, fellow Republicans Cheryl Bean and Leslie Robnett and Democrats Diane Symons and Carlos Walker have also filed to run.

Representatives in the Texas House earn $7,200 a year.
