The city of Alton has been awarded the Government Finance Officers Association’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its budget on Thursday.

According to Alton Police Chief Jonathan Flores, this marks the eighth consecutive year the city has been recognized for this achievement.

“The award represents a significant achievement by the entity,” the news release said. “It reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting.”

An entity has to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation in order to receive this award.

The guidelines are designed to assess how well an entity’s budget serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide and a communications device.

The budget documents need to be rated as “proficient” in all four categories and in 14 mandatory criteria within those categories in order to receive this award.

Not only is the award granted to an entity upon meeting the criteria but a Certificate of Recognition for Budget Presentation is also presented to individuals or the department designated as being responsible for having achieved the award.

In this case, the finance department was presented with this certificate.
