Abbott blames Biden for rise in migrant kids at border
DALLAS, Texas — Texas Gov. Greg Abbott spoke on Wednesday about the influx of unaccompanied children crossing into the state across the U.S.-Mexico border.
Abbott made his remarks at a news conference in Dallas, one of two Texas cities the Biden administration has recently identified to host temporary shelters for thousands of migrant children.
The Washington Post reported the locations earlier this week following news of overcrowding at facilities in south Texas.
The governor blamed the Biden administration for the need for the added housing sites, which he contended will only grow exponentially in the days to come.
“These sites are a direct result of President Biden’s reckless open border policies that are causing a surge in crossings and cartel activity,” said Abbott. “The administration has yet to provide answers that Texans deserve.”
But some Democrats questioned Abbott’s motivations. In a tweet Wednesday, former San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro condemned Abbott for using children as “political props.”
“Where was he when Donald Trump was treating children with cruelty and creating a backlog of asylum claims?” Castro asked.
