El Pasoan studying at SMU is shot, killed in Dallas
DALLAS, Texas – An El Paso man was shot and killed in Dallas over the weekend, according to police.
Dallas homicide detectives are investigating the death of 19-year-old Robert “Jaden” Urrea, according to Dallas ABC affiliate WFAA.
Police responded to his shooting around 3 a.m. Saturday.
Investigators said they believe Urrea was out celebrating Halloween when he was shot. Urrea was transported to a Dallas hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Officials with Southern Methodist University said Urrea was a second-year student who recently transferred to their university. The Coronado High School graduate was pursuing a degree in political science on a pre-law track.
“I know I speak for all of us here at SMU in offering our sympathies to Jaden’s family, loved ones and friends,” wrote Melinda J. Sutton, associate vice president for student affairs and dean of students.
Dallas police said they obtained surveillance video that showed Urrea and his attackers on camera.
Officials said on the video Urrea can be seen falling to the ground after being shot. A vehicle was then seen driving away as it fled from the shooting scene.
No suspects have been arrested and police are not saying if the attackers knew Urrea.
Memorial services for Urrea are pending. His parents, Dr. Robert and Patricia Urrea, along with his sister Katrianna Urrea, issued the statement below.
